Making more time for my photography has been a struggle for me lately. Lots of things going on and the holidays have distanced me and camera. Deep down I have had an empty feeling, and couldn’t place it; until recently. I decided to take some time before work last weekend and just go out shooting, I am so glad I did. It was a great chance to not think about anything else but creating images. I came away with some ones I am very pleased with, and even added them to my portfolio.

I took a walk down to the Pier in Portland, where the Casco Bay Lines is located to see if I could get anything. Not really much there and then I look across to the next wharf and immediately knew I needed to get over there. The image below is what resulted.

The contrast of shapes and colors just drew me in. There was no cars on the wharf at the time so I figured everything was closed, it was also a Sunday. While walking down to the end of that pier I was creating the composition in my head so I could quickly get what I was looking for in case I was asked to leave. Fortunately, there was no one around. I snapped a few shots and knew I had it. On the way back I looked over at the ferry boats, which was a different angle than what I have seen in the past. I snapped a few shots and came away with the image that opened this post.

These types of images is what started my fascination with photography. The every day objects or scenes that are seen in an abstract way. This is what I needed to get back on my photography legs again and get excited to make more images like this. I need to do this more often, it really helps me understand my style and what I look for. Here is one more from that day.

These images were all created with in a matter of 20 minutes and in less than 20 frames. It almost felt like an out of body experience, much like I feel when I am performing as a musician or conducting. A heightened sense of being, just letting go and being in the moment. The images that resulted, I feel, are representation of me, and was a realization that I had after seeing the images and presenting them here. I love contrasts; in color, shapes, space. I use quite a bit of negative space as well, sometimes composing the majority of the image. I don’t know why these images have those characteristics, I’m sure there is an explanation for it, but maybe they are left for me to know and for others to interpret for themselves. After all that is the beauty of art, interpretation.

Clicking on the photos will take you to the gallery where you can purchase prints. I also was able to add some more images to my personal project; Portraits of Exteriors: Doors and Windows. Thank you for reading and leave your comments, I would love to hear what you think about these images.

I don’t enter a lot of photography competitions. The ones I have entered were nothing more than a place to share my work and to get some inspiration, more on that in a bit. However, I had a great surprise the other day when I got an email from Trevor Current (@TrevorCurrent on Twitter) over at CurrentPhotographer.com. I had submitted the above image into their very first photo challenge with the theme being Abstract. I don’t think I had very many public votes but the judges felt I deserved 2nd place.

Wait… 2nd place?! I think this might have been the first contest where I won something with one of my images. Check out the official announcement and see the other great images that received 1st and 3rd. This site is also a resource that I have used many times. They have announced their March Photo Challenge, There is no place like home, so swing on over and check them out. So why did I enter? Read on after the jump.

Besides the little ego boost that you get from winning something, photography competitions can also be a learning tool. I personally like the ones that have a theme or subject and where you get to see every submission. This allows me to see other people’s take on the subject matter and may inspire me to try some new techniques or angles of though based on the theme. Its a great place to find many photos dealing with one subject in one place. I often peruse the images looking for something that jumps out at me and then I try to reverse engineer how it was taken. Especially with using artificial light, as I am still grasping those concepts. There are a ton of competitions out there but I am selective. I have entered several monthly competitions and projects over at Photographycorner.com, where I am a pretty active member. The community there is very supportive of learning and helps each other out, without the condescending attitudes that can be associated with the photography industry. I am careful with which competitions I enter as I value my work; which took a while to grasp. If there is anything in the rules that impede my personal growth or takes credit away from me as the photographer, chances are I will not enter. Those include copyright issues and other personal beliefs. If you decide to enter competition make sure you read the rules before entering.

It was a nice surprise to have my photo chosen and I found some great images that made me think.
